What Orpheic sends to the internet

Everything, listed. If it is not on this page, Orpheic does not do it, and if you ever find it doing something that is not here, that is a bug, and we would like to hear about it.

What Orpheic does not do today

To show your music

These happen on their own, because without them your library would be a wall of grey squares.

WhatWhere toWhat is sent
The database of records
downloaded once, then updated about once a month when you choose to
data.orpheic.com (ours) A plain download request. Nothing about your library, recognising your albums happens afterwards, on your own computer.
Looking for a newer version
once a week, a minute after Orpheic opens, and when you press Look for a new Orpheic version or Check for newer
data.orpheic.com (ours) A plain download request for the list of current versions. Nothing about you or your library.
Album covers and artists' photographs pubd.org (ours, an image mirror); if it is down, the public sources it mirrors: the Cover Art Archive at archive.org, and Wikimedia Commons The public catalogue number of a record, or the name of a photograph. For an album Orpheic could not recognise, nothing is asked at all.

Like any download, each of these shows the server your internet address, and a short label saying the request comes from Orpheic. There is no switch to turn them off; Stop for now in Settings pauses them until the next time you open Orpheic.

Only if you use the remote

All of this is off until you turn on Settings → Phone and TV → Let my devices control Orpheic. Most of it starts only once a phone or television has been paired.

WhatWhere toWhat is sent
Finding each other at home Your own network only The computer announces itself on your home network as “Orpheic on your computer's name”, so the phone can find it. Nothing leaves the house.
The meeting point
while a device is paired
rendezvous.orpheic.com (ours, or your own) The computer's public key, its internet address, its addresses on your home network, and which port it listens on. The meeting point therefore knows when your computer is online, and from where.
Staying findable
while a device is paired
rendezvous.orpheic.com A small packet every 25 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on how long your router keeps the way open (Orpheic measures it, and now and then the meeting point answers after a pause to check). With it the meeting point always knows where your computer is right now and can tell a phone that is away from home. When it starts, and again after your computer wakes or changes network, the packet carries the computer's public key; the regular ones carry only a random number the meeting point gave it, and a seal that proves they come from your computer. Nothing about your music, your library or your listening.
Listening away from home Directly to your computer Your music, encrypted end to end between your phone and your computer. Our meeting point only introduces the two; it never carries your music.
Opening a door on your router Your own router Orpheic asks your router to forward one port to your computer, so that the phone can reach it from outside. Turn off Reach me from the internet and it stops asking, and removes the forwarding.
The pairing code orpheic.com, only if the phone does not have the app yet The code is a link. If the app is missing, the phone's browser opens it on this site to send you to the download, and that visit carries the computer's home-network address and public key. The secret part of the code never leaves the phone.

The app on your phone or television talks only to your computer (every cover and photograph it shows comes from there) and, when you are away from home, to the meeting point above. When you choose to send a problem report from it, that report goes to orpheic.com.

Only if you send a problem report

In Settings, Send a problem report (and on the phone, under Details) shows what will be sent before anything leaves. Nothing is sent until you press Send report.

WhatWhere toWhat is sent
A problem report
only when you press Send report
orpheic.com (ours) Orpheic's log from this session and the one before (on Linux, what the system log kept from the last two days), the versions of Orpheic and of your system, the sound output in use, what you typed, and, if Orpheic closed by itself in the last two days, where in the program it stopped (a list of places in Orpheic's own code, nothing of yours). The log names the folders and albums Orpheic was working on. Your user name and home folder are replaced by ~. Never your music, covers, playlists or library.

We do not keep your internet address with the report. Each report is deleted after 90 days, or sooner if you write to us with its code and ask.

orpheic.com sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from anyone else, even the typeface is served from here. Like every site, it is reached through a network provider (Cloudflare) that sees your internet address when you visit.
