Orpheic runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a remote for Android phones and Google TV. It is free. This is an early version: some things will not work yet, and we want to hear about them.
An installer for 64-bit Windows. It installs for your account only and does not ask for an administrator password.
Download for WindowsA package for Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint that updates with the rest of your system, and an AppImage for every other 64-bit Linux.
Download for Debian, Ubuntu, Mint Download the AppImageFor Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and newer), macOS 13 or later. Signed and checked by Apple: it opens without warnings.
Download for MacFor Android phones and Google TV: your library in your hand, at home or away. It plays on the computer, or on the phone itself.
Download for Android phones Download for Google TVYour browser may warn that the file is not commonly downloaded. Choose Keep.
When you open it, Windows shows a blue window, Windows protected your PC. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Windows says this about every new program until enough people have downloaded it, not because anything is wrong with it.
Open the downloaded file and drag Orpheic into Applications. The first time you open it, macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet: choose Open. Apple has checked it, so there is nothing else to allow.
For bit-perfect sound Orpheic takes your DAC for itself while it plays (hog mode). Other programs can use it again as soon as Orpheic stops.
Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint. Open the downloaded package: your software centre installs it. It also adds Orpheic's own package source, so new versions arrive with your usual system updates. In a terminal, the same thing is:
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings curl -fsSL https://orpheic.com/apt/orpheic-archive-keyring.gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/orpheic-archive-keyring.gpg >/dev/null curl -fsSL https://orpheic.com/apt/orpheic.sources | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/orpheic.sources >/dev/null sudo apt update && sudo apt install orpheic
The packages are signed with the key A172 4CEF 0EE3 1250 B0DD 3B9F A337 659F 2F1E EC5C.
Any other Linux. Make the AppImage executable (in the file manager: Properties, then allow it to run as a program; or chmod +x Orpheic-0.9.6-beta-1f8aefda-x86_64.AppImage) and open it. It installs nothing; to remove it, delete the file. For a new version, download the new file and use it instead of the old one: if a phone is paired, first choose Quit Orpheic in Settings, so that the old one is not still running.
For bit-perfect sound Orpheic opens your DAC directly. While it plays, other programs cannot use that DAC, and they can again as soon as Orpheic stops.
Already have Orpheic? Install the new version over the old one: your library, settings and pairing stay, and the database is not downloaded again. To remove Orpheic and what it keeps, see Removing Orpheic.
Orpheic asks where your music is. Choose one folder or several, on any disks. It reads them, downloads its database of records, and recognises what you have, while the covers fill the screen.
A large library takes a while the first time: about two hours for 5,000 albums on a network drive, in our own test. After that, opening it is quick.
If your music is on a network drive with no password, Windows 11 may ask for a user name and password it will not accept. Give that shared folder a user and password on the network drive, and enter them when Windows asks.
Orpheic must already be running on your computer. In Orpheic, open Settings → Phone and TV and turn on Let my devices control Orpheic.
On a phone. Open this page on the phone and download the phone file. Android asks whether your browser may install apps: allow it for this once. Google Play Protect may say it does not know the app. Choose Install anyway. Then, in Orpheic on the computer, choose Pair a device and point the phone's camera at the code on the screen.
On a Google TV. A television has no browser for downloads. Install the free app Downloader from the Play Store on the TV, allow it to install apps, and type orpheic.com/tv. Open the Remote, choose Pair a device in Orpheic on the computer, and type the six-digit code it shows, with the TV's remote control.
In the car. Android Auto shows only apps that come from the Play Store, so the Remote will appear in the car with its Play Store version, which is on its way.
A new version does not install itself yet. Download it again from this page and install it over the old one. Your pairing stays.
You do not need this to install Orpheic. It is here for anyone who wants to be sure a file is exactly the one we published.

In Orpheic, open Settings → Send a problem report: it shows you what it sends, and sends it to us when you press Send report.
Or write to [email protected]. Say what you did and what happened instead. A screenshot helps, and so does the log: in Settings, Show the log file opens the folder that holds it.
